WSI, the Institute for Economic and Social Research, is an independent research institute within the Hans Böckler Foundation, which is closely related to the German trade unions.
The Hans Böckler Foundation covers a broad field of activities including the promotion of co-determination, the promotion and funding of research and the promotion of scholarships for students and PhD students. The Foundation also has a second research institute on macroeconomics (IMK), which co-operates closely with WSI.
WSI has a long research tradition in the fields of economics, social and labour policy. It has close contacts to social partner organisations, which usually facilitate the access to information and empirical field work. Furthermore, WSI provides original information on the development of working conditions and industrial relations in Germany (e.g. by the means of the WSI collective agreements archive and via its regular representative survey on works and staff councils). The Institute is currently involved in about 50 research projects.
